How to Make Your Extensions Actually Last

The real talk your stylist wishes she could tell you at every appointment

BY JENISSE · SIGNATURE EXTENSIONS · DELRAY BEACH, FL
Girl, your extensions are an investment — in yourself, your confidence, your glow. And I want them to last every single day between your appointments. So let's have the real conversation about what it actually takes to keep them looking lush, healthy, and beautiful. ✨
01

How You Sleep Is Everything

This is the one I can't stress enough — never, ever go to sleep with wet hair. Your hair is at its absolute weakest when it's wet, and tossing and turning all night on damp extensions is one of the fastest ways to end up with matted roots, tangles, and breakage. I've seen it happen so many times, and it breaks my heart because it's so preventable!

Before bed, always make sure your hair is fully dry. Then protect it by loosely braiding it or putting it in a low ponytail with a silk scrunchie. And yes — a silk or satin bonnet or pillowcase is your new best friend. Silk creates way less friction than cotton, meaning you wake up with smooth, frizz-free extensions instead of a tangled mess. Trust me on this one.

BEDTIME ROUTINE ✓
  • Always dry your hair completely before sleeping — no exceptions
  • Wear a silk or satin bonnet to reduce friction and protect your bonds
  • Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase as your backup
  • Loosely braid your hair or put it in a low ponytail before bed
  • A loose French braid is ideal — you'll even wake up with waves!
02

Brush With Love, Not Force

Brushing your extensions consistently is one of the most important things you can do — but how you brush matters just as much as how often. Use a wide-tooth comb or a soft-bristle extension brush, and always start from the ends, working your way up to the roots. Never rip from the top down — that puts too much tension on your bonds and your natural hair.

Place your hand at the attachment points while you brush to brace against pulling. Make it a daily habit: morning, before bed, before washing, and after washing. The more consistently you brush, the less tangling you'll deal with — and the longer your extensions will look and feel brand new.

Also — avoid any brush with little plastic balls on the tips of the bristles. They can catch on your wefts and cause unnecessary damage.

03

Wash Smart, Not Often

Washing too frequently is one of the biggest mistakes extension wearers make.

Aim to wash your hair 1–2 times per week max. Over-washing strips your extensions of the moisture they need to stay healthy — and unlike your natural hair, extensions can't replenish their own oils.

When you do wash, always detangle first. Tilt your head back in the shower instead of flipping your hair forward over the sink — that flip creates so much unnecessary tangling! Shampoo your roots using a downward motion, and condition only from mid-shaft to ends. Keep conditioner away from your bonds and attachment points — it can cause slippage and make them loosen faster.

On the days you're not washing, dry shampoo is your go-to for keeping roots fresh. And always finish with a lightweight leave-in conditioner or serum applied from mid-length down to lock in moisture between washes

THE RIGHT PRODUCTS ✓
  • Always use a sulfate-free and paraben-free shampoo and conditioner.
  • Use cool or lukewarm water — hot water weakens bonds over time.
  • Apply a deep conditioning treatment once a week for 10–15 minutes.
  • Use a nourishing oil or serum 1–2x daily on the mid-lengths and ends.

"The better you care for your extensions between appointments, the longer they last — and the healthier your natural hair grows underneath."

04

Oil Your Extensions — Every. Single. Day.

This is the step most women skip, and it's one of the most important things you can do for your extensions. Here's why: your extensions have no scalp. Your natural hair gets a steady flow of nourishing oils traveling down each strand — but your extensions don't have that. Without daily moisture, they dry out, become brittle, develop split ends, and start to tangle and break far sooner than they should.

Daily oiling is how you give your extensions the hydration they're missing. It locks in moisture, seals the hair cuticle, boosts shine, reduces frizz and static, prevents tangling, and protects against heat and environmental damage. Especially here in South Florida, where the sun, humidity, and saltwater are constant — your extensions need that daily barrier of protection.

The key is where you apply it. Always work the oil from your mid-lengths down to the ends — never near your roots or bonds. That's where the hair is driest and needs the most love. Just 1–3 pumps is all you need depending on your hair thickness. Less is more!

I personally recommend applying your oil at night before you put your bonnet on. That way, if you use a little too much, it soaks in overnight and you wake up with silky, soft extensions — not greasy ones. Morning or night, just make it a daily habit and your extensions will thank you with longer life and way more shine.

HOW TO APPLY OIL ON EXTENSIONS ✓
  • Apply 1–3 pumps of oil — start small, you can always add more
  • Warm the oil between your palms first, then mid-shaft to ends only work it from
  • Never apply oil near your roots or bonds — this can cause slippage and loosen your extensions
  • Apply at night before your bonnet for the best absorption with no greasy look in the morning
  • Use a color-safe, extensionsafe oil — I created Jenisse Beauty Products Amethyst Oil specifically for this
05

Heat Styling — Less Is More

We all love a good blowout or curl, but heat is one of the biggest threats to your extensions' longevity. Extensions have already been through additional processing, which means they don't bounce back from heat damage the way your natural hair does.

Always use a heat protectant before any hot tool touches your hair — no skipping it, ever. Keep your tools at 350°F or below for human hair extensions. When blow-drying, let your hair air dry about 80% of the way first, then finish on a low heat setting. Try to make your curls or waves last 2–3 days so you're reaching for that curling iron less often.

Embrace heatless styles like braids, buns, and soft ponytails on your off days. Your extensions will literally thank you for it.

06

Swimming, Sun & Sweat

Florida living is beautiful — but chlorine, saltwater, and humidity are not your extensions' best friends. Both chlorine and salt pull moisture out of your hair rapidly, leading to dryness, expansion, and matting.

Before swimming, prep your hair by rinsing with fresh water first, then applying a generous amount of leave-in conditioner from mid-length to ends. Braid your hair tightly to minimize tangling in the water. Right after swimming, wash and deep condition your hair as soon as possible. If you're in the pool often, consider a swim cap to protect your bonds.

And one thing most people don't know — check your sunscreen labels! Sunscreens with avobenzone or octocrylene can actually discolor blonde extensions. If you're a blonde babe (my specialty!), switch to a mineral sunscreen that's extension-safe to protect your color.

07

Don't Forget Your Bonds

This step only takes a few minutes a day, but it makes such a difference — gently run your fingers through your hair daily to separate your bonds. Over time, shed hair can get caught between bonds and cause matting and tangling. Catching it early keeps everything feeling clean and light.

This daily habit also helps you spot anything that needs attention before your next salon visit. The goal is always to make your move-up appointment a smooth, easy experience — not a rescue mission!

08

The Non-Negotiable Don'ts

I want you to protect your investment at all costs. Here's the shortlist of what to avoid so your extensions stay stunning all the way to your next appointment:

PLEASE DON'T ✕
  • Sleep with wet hair — the #1 cause of matting
  • Skip your bonnet or silk pillowcase at night
  • Use shampoos or conditioners with sulfates, parabens, or heavy silicones
  • Apply conditioner directly to your bonds or attachment points
  • Brush harshly from root to tip — always start at the ends!
  • Use heat tools above 350°F — and never on wet or damp hair
  • Go swimming without prepping your hair first
  • Use sunscreens with avobenzone or octocrylene if you're blonde
  • Skip your regular maintenance appointments — staying on schedule keeps your extensions healthy and your natural hair protected
  • Tie your hair in tight ponytails or buns while sweating or in humid conditions
